Thoughts on battling the world

My time in preparation this week has been spent considering the battle with the world as it relates to spiritual warfare.  I would like to share some of the worthy quotes that relate to this matter that may or may not be included in the sermon on Sunday…

“By nature, we have a worldly mind that is not ‘subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be’ (Rom. 8:7).  As much as we were nourished by an umbilical cord in our mother’s womb, so we were tied to the world from birth.”     Joel R. Beeke  from Overcoming the World

“The soul has looked on the world so long, and the world’s picture is so firmly fixed in its eye, that when the soul is turned for a moment toward heaven, it feels only a quiver of inarticulate light and retains no distinct impression of the things that are unseen and eternal.”            Charles H. Spurgeon from Quotable Spurgeon

“Worldliness, then, is human nature without God.”      Joel R. Beeke  from Overcoming the World

“Holiness is not a series of do’s and don’ts, but conformity to the character of God and obedience to the will of God.”     Jerry Bridges from The Pursuit of Holiness

“According to Jesus, Christianity is not cool.  There I said it.  I’ll even go a step farther:  if what’s fashionable in our society interests you, then true Christianity won’t.  It’s that simple.”      Tullian Tchividijian  from Unfashionable

“Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.  For what will profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul.”  Matthew 16:24-26
